weekend update

Woohoo, back in Holland! But the fabulous fam is not here, but held captive indirectly by a nuisancy taiphoon in Guangdong... What is it with my ill luck and taifongs?

Am off to spoil the eye and the mind silly with the cream of missed movies from this quarter. Luckily, Europe gets most pictures a wee later than our gargantuan cousins in the US, though the local bioscoop boasts a few titanic screens of its own.

Much good stuff happened in November and life is more complex each day, but all I've got to worry about for the next few days is the inevitable excruciation of my dental appointment with the aptly-named Dr. Knappers tomorrow morning. At least, Ms. Woolf's "Orlando" is whimsical dessert enough even if I dreamt of watermelons in my jet-lagged daze last night and woke to a blank fridge stocked with filtered water and a wedge of white cheese.

More catch-up details to come, hopefully, of the wonderful dinner party that was had--the eight bottles of wine to twelve giggly personae from the 20's and nary an out of place velvet coat hem or false spectacle in sight! The best costume was probably either the lovely Isadora Duncan (with fiery storybook hair and expertly draped Grecian sheet and gold pinnings) or the charmingly peppery Mr. Joyce.

But that was in California; I'm now sitting alone in our vast tower in the low countries and looking out to the shadowy industrial spires of Utrecht. On a lighter, more escapist note, the movies I intend to see:

A History of Violence (Viggo Mortenson is killer turned decent diner owner turned back)
The Constant Gardener (international intrigue, identity, ayayaye!)
Chronicles of Narnia (I have to: I grew up on this before I realised the allegory)
King Kong (Peter Jackson gets to play with more money)
Brokeback Mountain (so much more than your average gay cowboy movie)

Wish me luck, gods of the weather with your impossibly Dutch Masters clouds--galleons really--
