My Alpha Fruit

Every time I'm feeling tired or lazy or just plain pressed for time, I think about not going to wushu class; however, every time I do go, I have a fantastic time. This is worth remembering for the darker days to come.

An unignorable desire for watermelon caused a slight detour home: Safeway's broad red banner is always open and welcoming. I ended up getting more waffles (these things are soooo transcendental with wildflower honey and sliced banana), the bright fruity accompanist, a tabloid, and the first winter melon I lifted from a row. I patted it and the sound was surprisingly... perfect. Saturated, sprung. Still, I was worried. Could they, could Safeway's partners rather, grow a sweet, luscious melon in winter? I had to take a chance: my tongue was dry for it. I pushed the green-skinned gamble home in the Pink Panther's basket. Ceremonial for once, I washed it in the sink and patted it dry. The long kitchen knife slid in easily and as per my irregular style, the cut did not meet from beginning to end on the same plane, so I broke off the rest.

This brief forceful motion revealed a delightfully concentrated pinkish red center. It smelled sweet (though to be honest, I cheated a little by cutting open the sunny end first to soften the disappointment in case it was a pallid dud) and I stuck my thinnest-rimmed spoon into it. The flesh was crisp, but generously yielding. I made a little twirl with the wrist and the spoon was heavy, brilliant with its load. I bit into the ruby scoop--it was intense enough to poach at my new cavities, which sent little shrieking shivers into the bed of my mouth. This was surely the best $7 I've spent in a long while.

Is it weird to want to hit on your own ex? Yeah, but what a fun thought--still missing Kim Jung Il, but there's no sadness really. It's kind of a great space to be: I should appreciate our inching progress this week.

Now playing: EBTG's "Walking Wounded". There are still some tracks I have to skip because of their very applicable slate loveliness. I tried being pretentious and listening to Stereolab while grading, but it was really annoying. Maybe the tinny machinery of this laptop doesn't do their production justice. Or maybe I've never really wanted to like them beyond the admittedly endearing "Dots and Loops" from way back when I was still sorta caught up on real-time music.

Time to go back to the watermelon and the papers.
