The Earth is Prolific, draft I

from "The Napkin Blues"

The Earth is prolific
with multiple animals.

To make the threshold less lonely,
We love a double leap.

But the elephant wanders off
the grounds when he is through

With conversation, prefers the shade
of his own ear when it counts.

I had found you soothing.
I wanted to come in.

But the house we built pulled
itself down to the flood.

Now I have the certain beam,
you the hopeful dinghy.

I can not tell what was more,
the hospice bed gone

To the deepsea fishers
or the indivisible we pinioned there.
