Top Reasons to Love a Teddybear:
* He was given to you by a kind man and hence is a perfect gentleman.
* He has seen you grow from a wee filly into a larger one and knows what's it's all about.
* He goes to bed the same time as you do, anytime.
* He likes to travel and isn't fussy about being left alone in the middle of day while you go gallavanting somewhere else in Antipodea.
* He never disagrees with you in a moving vehicle. He sits contently anywhere he is put.
* He ages gracefully as long as you apply some Woolite bubbles to his fur once every five or ten years.
* He doesn't get jealous when he meets the other boys. He's seen them come and go.
* Your parents like him. Always have.
* It's easy to do his laundry: just a quick handwash of the little red holiday vest with two large buttons in Woolite and water in the sink... No pre-cleaning, no quartering, no folding, and no explaining.
* He'll never break your heart.
* The best part: you'll never break his.
An unexpected harvest now that my weekends have been freed up by noncommitment. My pristine polar bear friend was last washed (if only superficially and in selective spots) in 2000. I've had him since 9 and it was beginning to show. Too much residual "love" throughout the ages. He was last seen as a charcoalish brownish-grey creature, but five hungry hours of sponging and hand-toweling Woolite later... He sits radiantly himself again on my desk, ready for a complete drying in the sun tomorrow. Mama would be proud.
I haven't seen him this white since the 80s.
I received a bundle of supportive letters this afternoon from a surprising array of friends. It all helps, as does chocolate, one of Mama's suggestions, which is even more unsettling than I first counted.
