miracle of cucumbers

Just found out this Sunday (as biblically stormy as it was) while J was over for a vegetarian repast--slivers of cucumber make cold noodle mixes taste much fresher... The company was so good and funny that neither of us realised it was Oscar Sunday. Consequently, there was prodigious catching up with trashy fashion coverage of the event yesterday. At least E! is honest enough to admit that they don't care one nesbit about who wins or loses in the movie race: it's what they wear! Prof. C walked in on my gawking at the red carpet pics and I found myself trying to explain this unwholesome fixation through ironic fascination with blatant pop-culture. Sadly, the immediate horror of the Shows happening all around since "Las Meninas" has become anything but ironic.

Finally got hold of a copy of the Tassajara Bread Book on loan--even just the orange whole wheat pancakes have my pining for Sunday mornings and sunny chairs.

And last night V and I had a needed conversation at last: after the heavy machinery was moved out of the way, she told me about a new hybrid TV show where it's Martha meets made-for-TV-movie. Apparently, where there should be a commercial break, instead one gets granola lumps of wisdom re: how to better tend to one's homes and gardens.

The best part of the conversation was finding an answer to that eternally relevant question: "What would you be (metaphorically) if you had to be a modern appliance?" I was flattered and scandalised to learn: "A television."
